The Baby Diet

The new doc, as aforementioned, is a big fan of nutrition and it's role in baby-making. In addition to my Femara, I was "prescribed" a nutrition plan. It is as follows;

1) No fast food and avoid as many commercially prepared products as possible, ie my wonderful Cheez-its, Oreos, etc, pretty much anything packaged.

2) Use olive oil or canola oil when cooking

3) Eat more veggie protein like beans and nuts, and less animal protein (which isn't hard because we just eat fish and fowl)

4) Choose whole grains and other sources of carbs that have lower, slower effects on blood sugar and insulin (this is the hard one for me...I LOVE me some bread)

5) Drink a glass of whole milk or have a small dish of ice cream or full fat yogurt every day; temporarily trade in skim, low-fat or non-fat dairy products for their full fat cousins (done and done, Dr. Jacobsen!)

6) Take a pre-natal vitamin. (Jason was told to take a multi-vitamin)

7) Increase the amount of fruits and veggies we eat that are rich in iron

8) Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Water is best, coffee and tea ok in moderation, no soda. No alcohol for either of us.

9) Aim for a healthy weight, which he said I am at. Yay for me!

10) Daily exercise is important. (brisk 30-min walks, yoga, stretching, etc)

11) No smoking. (Easy --- never smoked in my life)

So, there you have it. It's actually both easier and harder than it sounds, if that makes any sense. Easier because I already do quite a bit of these things but harder because there are some things that I don't really adhere to very well such as the daily exercise, or eating the right kinds of carbs and avoiding prepackaged food such as cookies, chips and crackers, or hydrating as well as I should. But I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get pregnant and if this might help, consider it done. Being healthier is definitely not a bad thing - it may be hard to keep up with, eating this way definitely takes concerted effort even after just 3 days (man oh man did I ever want french bread slathered in butter today!) but I think a more holistic approach in addition to the non-holistic meds is worth trying. Perhaps the balance will be the key.
